- The ASSU Senate and Council of Presidents should not make
blanket statements claiming to represent every Stanford students
on state, national, or international issues (off campus issues).
- In addition to the opinion of the ASSU Senate or Council of
Presidents, the opinion of the Stanford student body as gathered
through the following methods should be included in a
resolution regarding an off campus issue.
- The ASSU Senate or Council of Presidents shall not be empowered
to put forward resolutions for the Association on state, national, or
international matters not directly affecting Stanford students
until they have consulted with the Stanford student body through
any two (2) of the following means (methods will depend on time and
resources available):
- Passage of a referendum in a general election by a majority vote
specifically empowering the ASSU to address this policy for a one-year
period on a specific issue.
- Conduct of a Phone poll through the ASSU or the Stanford Daily,
polling at least 3%of the Stanford student body.
- Consultation of various student groups involved and students in
general through open forums and/or debates, dorm representatives, etc.
SECONDARY PROVISIONS
- The ASSU Senate and COP be encouraged to utilize these
methods for on campus issues.
- The ASSU Senate and COP also be encouraged to use other
methods of creating discussion and gathering student input regarding
state, national, or international issues (off-campus issues) through
the following methods:
- Support the efforts of other students to provide education and
discussion regarding the issue through such methods as teach-ins, dorm
discussions, debates etc.
- Serve as a contact with other students state-wide and across the
nation.
- Provide funding for its own or other student group efforts to
discuss all sides of the issue.
