Abstract:

The talk will describe the market for virtual goods in the online game industry, virtual worlds, and social networks. This will include:

  • An overview of the business models for the buying and selling of virtual goods as well as the development of the "virtual economy".
  • A review of some of the history of virtual commerce and some of the big events and players that have helped shape it.
  • The relationship between developers, publishers and payment providers, issues on intellectual property rights and game integration for ownership and transfer of virtual goods.
  • An overview of some of the legal, technical and financial issues that are involved with the commerce for virtual goods.
