MEMORIAL PLANS UPDATE

Please note the following information with regard to the National Day of
Prayer and Remembrance this Friday, September 14, and the campus
Memorial
Service on Monday, September 17, at noon in Memorial Glade.

The observance of a moment of silence will be changed from 10:00 AM
until
12:00 noon in compliance with the wishes of President Bush in his
declaration of the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance. I am asking
that
every member of the campus community stop what they are doing and
observe
silence as the Campanile bell tolls the noon hour. Since classes will be
ending at that time, I am asking that professors and students remain in
their classes until the moment of observance has concluded.

On Monday, at the request of the President of the ASUC, and with the
concurrence of the Chair of the Academic Senate and a majority of
Divisional
Council members, I am suspending classes from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM
so
that all members of the campus community have the opportunity to attend
our
campus memorial service.

At the request of the Departmental Personnel Managers, a space at the
Bancroft entrance of the University Art Museum, near the Alexander
Calder
sculpture titled "Hawk for Peace", is being set aside as a space for
faculty, staff and students to reflect, bring flowers and write messages
and
expressions of their feelings regarding the tragic events of this week.
The
University Art Museum itself is also available for thoughtful
reflection.
