Beyond Laurel/Yanny:
A Gallery of Polyperceivable Words

The Laurel/Yanny illusion is a famous audio clip that some people hear as the word "laurel" and others hear as the (dramatically different!) word "yanny." Our recent paper Beyond Laurel/Yanny: An Autoencoder-Enabled Search for Polyperceivable Audio asks whether other such "polyperceivable" audio clips exist. Surprisingly, we found several new examples of this phenomenon, and concluded that >2% of English words may be polyperceivable.

This page is a gallery of compelling examples we found while conducting our research. Each clip is provided at multiple playback rates, because slowing down the clip can sometimes cause a listener to suddenly switch perceptions! Of course, not all examples will work for all listeners — if you can't hear both perceptual modes, see if your friends agree…

For information on how these examples were found, please consult our paper. To submit an example of your own, please contact the authors.
