I'm glad john mentioned Mathias' article. It occurred to me as soon as i 
started shuffling thru' the avalanche of QED stuff i found in my mailbox
this morning.  It should be read as a warning, and is in any case full
of useful historical information you are unlikely to find anywhere else.
There is probably electronic copy floating around Cambridge somewhere.
If anyone wants one, they could try emailing ardm@sun1.mfo.uni-freiburg.de
or if that fails send me a massage at pmms.cam.ac.uk (the address in this
header is inoperative from this afternoon) and i will try to put it in
some anonymous ftp domain.
